Renting a campervan in Alice Springs is the way to go if you want the real outback experience. Right in the heart of Australia, Alice Springs is the perfect base for a road trip through the Red Centre. From here you can visit world-famous sights like Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and the impressive West MacDonnell Ranges.
Don't expect busy coastal towns or tropical beaches. Expect endless red plains, striking rock formations, deep gorges and some of the most beautiful night skies in the world. Along the way you'll regularly see wild kangaroos and emus, and maybe even dingoes. Aboriginal culture is a big part of this region too, and you can learn a lot about the history and spiritual meaning of the landscape.
A road trip from Alice Springs takes a bit more preparation than a coastal route. Distances are huge, gas stations are farther apart and temperatures can soar. In return, you get one of the most unique travel experiences in Australia, with a sense of peace and space you'll hardly find anywhere else.
Most travelers combine Alice Springs with a route north to Darwin and the tropics, or drive south to Adelaide. Both are among the most beautiful and varied campervan routes in Australia.
Note:
- There are very few campervan rental companies in Alice Springs. Because of that, prices are usually higher than if you pick up your campervan in, say, Adelaide or Darwin.
- During the wet season, the rental company locations are closed. That's generally December through March.
