The East Coast is hands down Australia's most popular road trip, and for good reason. From big cities and surf beaches to tropical rainforest and the largest coral reef in the world, you won't find this much variety on one route anywhere else.
Whether you have three weeks or two months, a campervan trip along the East Coast is one you won't forget anytime soon. Lively cities, national parks, beautiful islands and laid-back coastal towns follow each other in quick succession. That variety is exactly what makes this route so special.
Why the East Coast is so popular
The route between Sydney and Cairns (or the other way around) is about 2,600 kilometers long. Along the way you pass through different climate zones, and the landscape keeps changing.
One day you're hiking in the Blue Mountains, the next you're learning to surf in Byron Bay. Then you're sailing among the beautiful Whitsunday Islands, exploring the world's largest coral reef, or driving a 4WD along the beaches of K'gari (Fraser Island).
The East Coast is also one of the easiest parts of Australia to travel by campervan. The roads are excellent, there are plenty of campgrounds, and along the way you'll find lots of charming coastal towns where you can happily hang out for a few days.
