Visiting Noosa on your Australia road trip

Noosa is one of the most popular destinations on Australia's East Coast. This charming coastal town, about a two-hour drive north of Brisbane, is known for its beautiful beaches, relaxed vibe and amazing nature. Whether you want to surf, hike, spot wildlife or just enjoy the beach, Noosa has something for every traveler.

That mix of nature, laid-back charm and things to do is why Noosa is a fixed stop for so many travelers on a road trip between Brisbane and Cairns.

Why is Noosa so special?

A lot of beach towns are mostly about the beach and the nightlife. Noosa has much more going for it. There's a charming town center with nice cafés and restaurants, and one of Australia's most beautiful national parks is right next door.

Noosa is also a great place to slow down for a bit. The relaxed atmosphere means a lot of travelers end up staying longer than they planned.

Noosa National Park

The highlight of Noosa is, without a doubt, Noosa National Park.

The park sits right on the coast and is free to enter. The best-known walk is the Coastal Walk, a trail past spectacular cliffs, hidden bays and beautiful lookouts over the ocean.

Along the way you have a good chance of spotting wild koalas high up in the eucalyptus trees. Keep an eye on the ocean too, because dolphins often swim by. Visiting Noosa between June and November? Then there's a good chance you'll even see humpback whales migrating along the coast.

You don't have to walk the whole trail. Even a short stretch gives you stunning views.

Main Beach

Right in the middle of Noosa is Main Beach, one of the few beaches on Australia's East Coast that's largely sheltered from the wind.

That means the waves are often calmer, which makes it ideal for swimming, relaxing or your first surf lesson.

Hastings Street runs along the beach and is the place to go for a drink, lunch or dinner. There are lots of great spots with something for everyone, from a quick bite to upscale restaurants.

Noosa Everglades

One of the most remarkable trips you can take from Noosa is a visit to the Noosa Everglades.

This vast nature area is one of only two everglades systems in the world. You glide over glassy water through untouched wilderness, with everything around you reflected perfectly. No wonder the area is known as the Mirror River.

The dark water stands out right away, but don't let it fool you. The color comes from natural tannins released by the leaves and bark of the surrounding eucalyptus and tea trees. They turn the water the color of tea, yet it stays surprisingly clean and clear.

You can explore the Everglades by canoe, by kayak or on a guided boat tour. The reflections are at their best early in the morning, when the water is almost perfectly still. For many visitors, this is one of the most surprising and photogenic natural areas in Australia.

Surfing in Noosa

Noosa is one of Australia's best-known surf destinations and a great spot for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Because it's sheltered, the waves are often gentler than at many other East Coast beaches, so you get good surf almost all year round.

Main Beach is the ideal spot for beginners. The waves are usually gentle, and several surf schools offer lessons and board rentals. Never surfed before? Noosa is one of the best places in Australia to learn.

Already have some experience? Then First Point, National Point and Tea Tree Bay are popular surf spots. First Point in particular is famous worldwide for its long, consistent waves, where you can sometimes ride for dozens of meters. When conditions are good, these breaks draw surfers from all over the world.

Even if you stay out of the water, it's fun to watch the surfers from shore. Around Noosa National Park especially, you get a stunning view while the best surfers carve across the waves.

Camping with a campervan

Noosa is very well set up for campervan travelers. In and around town you'll find several holiday parks and campgrounds with good facilities.

Noosa National Park and Hastings Street are easy to reach by bike or on foot, so it's handy to leave your campervan at the campground and explore without it.

Good campgrounds include Noosa River Holiday Park in Noosa Heads and Habitat Noosa Everglades Eco Camp. The second one is perfect if you're planning to visit the Everglades.

Best time to visit Noosa

Noosa is a great destination all year round.

April through November usually brings the most comfortable temperatures and lower humidity. Traveling between June and November? Then you also have a chance of seeing humpback whales along the coast.

The best times are spring and fall, which means September/October and April/June.

Noosa is popular in the Australian summer too, although it can be hotter, more humid and a lot busier then.

How much time do you need in Noosa?

Noosa is a lovely place to spend a few nights. Want to combine the Everglades with the town of Noosa Heads? Then I'd stay at least 3 nights.

That gives you enough time to explore Noosa National Park, spend a day at the beach and do the Noosa Everglades trip.

Have more time? Noosa is a wonderful place to take a few extra days to unwind on your road trip.
