For many travelers, Sydney is where their Australian road trip starts or ends. With iconic sights like the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach, it's a city you really shouldn't skip.

Even though it's Australia's largest city, Sydney feels surprisingly relaxed. In no time you trade the impressive skyline for beautiful beaches, green parks and charming neighborhoods. For me, it's that mix that makes Sydney one of the most enjoyable cities in Australia.

I recommend spending at least three nights in Sydney before you pick up or after you drop off your campervan. That way you can explore the city at a relaxed pace without worrying about parking or traffic.

What makes Sydney special?

Sydney is a lot more than the world-famous Opera House or the Harbour Bridge. The city sits on one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the world and combines nature, beach and city life like no other big city.

You might walk along spectacular cliffs or take a surf lesson at Bondi Beach in the morning, have lunch by the water in the afternoon and end the day with a drink at a rooftop bar or a cozy restaurant in The Rocks. Thanks to all the parks, beaches and ferries, Sydney also feels surprisingly spacious and relaxed, even though it's Australia's largest city.

It's that variety that makes Sydney so special. Whether you love culture, great food, beaches, walking or a lively city, Sydney has it all. That makes it not just an ideal place to start or end your campervan trip, but also a place where you can easily stay a few extra days.

The highlights of Sydney

Sydney Opera House & Circular Quay

The Sydney Opera House is without a doubt the most famous building in Australia. Whether you go to a performance or just stroll along the water, this is a place you have to see.

Right next to it is Circular Quay, where the ferries leave from and street musicians keep the atmosphere lively. From here you also get a great view of both the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is every bit as iconic as the Opera House.

You can walk across the bridge for free and enjoy stunning views over the harbor. Looking for more adventure? Then do the famous BridgeClimb, where a guide takes you all the way to the top of the bridge. It's pretty pricey, though.

From the Opera House you get a great view of the whole Sydney Harbour Bridge. That makes it one of the best spots to photograph the entire bridge, and it's completely free.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

One of the most beautiful walks in Australia is the Bondi to Coogee Walk.

This coastal walk of about 6 kilometers takes you along cliffs, beaches and a string of bays. Along the way you pass Bondi Beach, Tamarama Beach, Bronte Beach and Coogee Beach.

Bring your swimsuit, because there are plenty of spots along the way for a refreshing dip.

Royal Botanic Garden

Right next to the Opera House is the Royal Botanic Garden. The garden is divided into different zones with a mix of native and exotic plant collections, ancient trees and native wildlife.

This big city park is ideal for getting away from the crowds for a while. From Mrs Macquarie's Chair you get maybe the best view of the Sydney skyline.

Besides the impressive nature, it's simply a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Walk the well-kept paths, learn about the Aboriginal history of the area and finish your visit with a coffee or lunch at one of the cozy cafés or restaurants.

Manly Beach

Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. The crossing takes about 20 minutes and is one of the most beautiful boat trips in Sydney in its own right.

When you get there, you'll find a charming town center, beautiful beaches and a relaxed vibe that's completely different from downtown. For many people, Manly is their favorite part of Sydney. The beach is a little less busy than Bondi Beach, for example, but just as much fun.

Surfing in Sydney

Sydney is a great place to learn to surf.

For beginners, Bondi Beach is the most popular spot. There are several surf schools here with lessons every day. A group lesson of about two hours costs $70 to $100 AUD on average, including surfboard and wetsuit.

Already have some surfing experience? Then Manly Beach, Freshwater Beach and Maroubra Beach are popular surf spots too.

Where to stay in Sydney without a campervan

Since most travelers pick up their campervan later or have already dropped it off, I recommend staying downtown or around Darling Harbour. In a city like Sydney there are all kinds of places to stay, so you have plenty of choice. Here are a few recommendations:

All of these are centrally located, and from here you can easily get to almost every sight by public transportation or on foot.

Where to stay overnight with a campervan in Sydney

Already traveling with a campervan? Then Lane Cove River Tourist Park is without a doubt the best choice.

This campground is right in the middle of a national park, about a 20-minute drive from downtown. From the campground it's easy to take the bus and metro to Circular Quay, so you don't have to drive your campervan through busy city traffic.

Traveling in the summer months? Book early so you're sure to get a spot.

Best time to visit Sydney

Thanks to its subtropical climate, Sydney is a great destination year-round. Summers are warm and winters are mild. Because it's on the coast, the ocean keeps the weather moderate and extreme temperatures are less common.

Personally, I find September through November and March through May the most pleasant. Temperatures are comfortable, there are fewer crowds and the weather is ideal for exploring the city.

Sydney is a fantastic destination in the Australian summer too. The beaches and best-known sights are busier then, but the atmosphere is especially lively. Outdoor patios are packed, there are lots of events and the city buzzes from early morning until late at night.

How much time do you need in Sydney?

Given the size of the city and all the sights and things to do, I recommend 3 nights.

That gives you enough time to see the main highlights, do the Bondi to Coogee Walk, take a ferry to Manly and enjoy the city at a relaxed pace.

Starting your road trip in Sydney? Then three days is ideal for recovering from the long flight and getting used to the time difference. If your road trip ends in Sydney, it's the perfect place to spend a few more relaxing days before you fly home.
