Road trip through Australia

A road trip through Australia by campervan: from the East Coast to the outback.

A road trip through Australia in a campervan gives you a real sense of freedom, adventure and calm. Think endless beaches, tropical rainforest and the rugged outback. Australia has it all.

But the country is also huge. That's why it pays to think ahead about which route you'll take, what you want to see and how much time you have.

Australia road trip: the ultimate route

Is there one ultimate route for a road trip through Australia? The short answer: no.

Australia is simply too big to see everything in one trip. I found that out myself during my years there. I did several road trips, in campervans and 4WDs, and even after a full lap of the country there are still places I haven't seen.

So it's not about finding the perfect route. It's about finding the route that suits you. What do you want to get out of your trip?

To get you started, I've put together the most popular routes:

Campervan routes through Australia.

Cairns → Brisbane/Sydney

East Coast

Perfect if you love sun, beaches and laid-back towns with a lively vibe.

  • Snorkeling or diving on the Great Barrier Reef
  • The Whitsunday Islands and the famous Whitehaven Beach
  • Fraser Island (K'gari), the largest sand island in the world
  • Surfing and kicking back in Byron Bay
  • Rainforests like Daintree National Park

Perth → Exmouth/Broome

West Coast

Ideal if you're after rugged nature, fewer crowds and landscapes you won't see anywhere else.

  • Swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef (Exmouth)
  • The gorges and waterfalls of Karijini National Park
  • The Pinnacles Desert near Cervantes
  • Turquoise Bay and Coral Bay
  • Endless empty beaches and outback scenery

Adelaide → Melbourne/Perth

South Coast

For wildlife, dramatic coastlines and a lot of variety in nature.

  • The Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles
  • Kangaroo Island, known for its wildlife and nature
  • Wine regions like the Barossa Valley
  • Whale watching (in season)
  • National parks and rugged coastlines

The best route depends on what you're after. So ask yourself:

  • Do you mostly want sun, beaches and a laid-back vibe?
  • Are you after adventure and rugged nature?
  • Or do you want to see as much wildlife as you can?

Or do you have completely different reasons for traveling around Australia in a campervan? If you think about this ahead of time, choosing a route gets a lot easier.

Don't worry if you find this hard. Australia isn't a place you visit every year, so you want to get it right the first time.

Why a road trip through Australia?

For a lot of travelers, a road trip through Australia is the trip of a lifetime. The country is huge, incredibly varied and made for exploring by campervan. From tropical rainforest and endless beaches to rugged national parks and the red outback, every region feels completely different.

The biggest advantage of traveling by campervan is the freedom. You choose your own route, your own pace and where you spend the night. Like a place? Stay longer. Pass a beautiful beach or lookout on the way? Just pull over.

A campervan trip through Australia is ideal because you:

  • combine transportation and accommodation
  • depend less on hotels or fixed routes
  • can cook your own meals and save money
  • can spend the night out in nature
  • can easily stop on a whim
  • get to experience the country in a much more adventurous way

On top of that, Australia has an excellent network of campgrounds, holiday parks and free rest areas. So you can make your trip as basic or as comfortable as you like.

For me, a campervan is the best way to really experience Australia. Not just for the famous highlights, but above all for the unexpected moments along the way: waking up by the ocean, kangaroos next to your campervan, or a sunset somewhere in the outback.

In a campervan, Australia isn't just a destination. It's an adventure.

How much time do you need for your Australia road trip?

I get asked this a lot, and it's one of the hardest questions to answer. Australia is huge, and you simply can't see everything in one trip.

To get a good sense of how much time you need, first decide which route you want to drive. Just as important: don't cram too much into it. Many travelers underestimate the distances and plan too many kilometers, so they end up sitting in the campervan for hours every day. That takes away from the whole experience.

My rule of thumb

Here's what I go by: allow at least 3 weeks between two major cities. For example, routes like:

  • Cairns → Brisbane
  • Brisbane → Sydney
  • Sydney → Melbourne
  • Melbourne → Adelaide
  • Adelaide → Perth
  • Perth → Broome
  • Broome → Darwin
  • Darwin → Cairns

These are rough guidelines, but they give you a good feel for the distances in Australia. With about three weeks per leg, you'll have enough time to see the highlights, make stops and really enjoy your road trip, without long drives every day.

Got more time?

Then you can combine several legs into a longer road trip. That's when it matters most to plan your route in a logical order and build in enough downtime.

[blok] My advice: fewer kilometers, more experiences. In the end, that's what makes your trip one to remember.
